Day 3:
Today I wanted to shift gears and share something a bit different that I’ve been learning about. I just read this really interesting article and so I wanted to share a few thoughts on it as well as what it discusses. In essence, the author takes an in-depth look at naming. We name things all the time in so many different disciplines, but especially when developing software. Every variable, function, class, method, all of it with unique names. Yet, like the article says, names change. It’s rare everything will stay fully static. Maybe you want to add a new property, or change your meaning with something so it needs a new name. The article really focuses on being intentional when naming. What you call something affects its framing and how you look at it. I think what’s really cool about this article is the intermingling of different disciplines. I’ve never really thought about it, but the organizing of information is so important, so of course there’s going to be a whole field dedicated to it, library science. It’s inspired me to take a new look at a field I’ve never thought about before.
