Here's something nobody mentions when they explain how the internet works: the address bar is kind of a polite fiction. google.com doesn't actually exist, not in any way your computer understands. Computers deal in numbers, strings like 142.250.80.46, and they've been doing it that way since the seventies. DNS, the Domain Name System, is the translator sitting quietly between you and all of that. You type a name, it returns a number, and this whole exchange happens in under a hundred milliseconds. Which is probably why nobody thinks about it until it breaks and suddenly the entire internet appears to be down.
