Welcome to the Expanding Essay interactive! This is a little experiment to showcase how essays or articles on the web could look like if they were made interactive based on how much a user wanted to read. If you click a coloured button the text will expand and clicking on the coloured sentences will cause those sentences to retract. You also have additional options through the buttons below to read the full version all at once, a slightly shorter version, or the shortest version. I was inspired by examples others have created online and decided to recreate it in a slightly different way below. You can read more about this project here.
I love writing on the web in my spare time. It's because on my own site I can publish and share whatever I want, however I want it. Writing is limitless because it allows me to create anything like worlds, characters, feelings and can transmit any experience, real or imaginary. Writing is also a form of art , like writing programming can be thought of as an art too. It also allows you to create anything. Both are words on a page, and both have the power to inspire. None is more "real" than the other. I think format is just as important as the material itself. Books have a different feel than magazines, which are both very different from websites. Yet at their core, they're all just text, aren't they? It changes and moves, it feels alive. Whatever you want to see, is what appears. Whatever you want to see, is what appears. You, the reader, remain in control.
